I would not say it is necessarily healthier; there are a couple of things to think about with agave nectar. It is considered "healthier" because it has a lower glycemic index than other sweeteners, so it is a "safer" sweetener, especially for diabetics. I would not count that to be a fact - I would definitely consult a physician. However, for any benefits from agave, you would need to get the all natural organic version that is not processed... this then may not be sweet.
It is considered a substitute for honey for vegans who will not eat the product from bees.
Agave nectar contains a high amount of fructose, which is not a good sugar for your body to digest. This, to me, is a reason I would not say it is a healthier option.

Hi Eric - I mentioned 5 simple changes, but you are right to mention there are a ton of things to consider every day when thinking about nutrition.
I am a believer in real foods, so if you're going to eat butter, then I would actually choose the real thing. Substitutes are full of chemicals, and I don't think they are healthier. I do think moderation is important; I'm not suggesting food should be cooked in or covered in butter, but if you are going to add a pat of butter to something, I would reach for the real thing. I don't have butter in my refrigerator, I cook with olive oil.
I have the same opinion about sugar - you shouldn't consume a great deal of sugar as it is, but if you're going to add a sweetener say to your coffee, I would vote for the real thing. Brown sugar and honey are good alternatives depending on what you're sweetening because they are also all natural.
I have not heard any reason to beware of whey. Yogurt and oatmeal is a wonderful breakfast!
I welcome other comments and suggestions readers have.
